About this deal

love this book so so much i love alexa demie so much and the story is very short but that’s all i need. For Alexa and I, doing this book of fairy tales was almost the most accurate reflection of the world around us today. the quality and look of the pictures is gorgeous, and everything about the sets, make up, costumes, etc.

The stories by themselves are quite one-dimensional, but completely come to life with the photography. In 2021, the Fairy Tales photo teasers featured almost empty diners, bedrooms and hospitals; readers blending fact and fiction could imagine these scenarios coming to life in front of them. Demie represents womxn through different lenses, all with outcomes of alienation and objectification. Fairy Tales’s cast of banshees and sprites and fallen angels may appear to have been tied up or subjugated by a villain, but look a little closer and you’ll notice that the mermaid has bound herself up in shibari ropes or the sirens are, in fact, sliding down stripper poles under the eerie spotlights of a seedy nightclub. This trope recurs throughout the book, challenging ideas of empowerment and restriction, symbolic of the patriarchy and our power to repurpose oppressive devices. Fairy Tales is] a collaboration with the photographer Petra Collins -- a body of work that reimagines the female creatures who inhabit folk- and fairy-tales, who are often cast as one-dimensional monsters or temptresses. You approach them with innocence, and you revisit them as an adult and realize there’s more going on. Each of the nine tales are set in unique spaces, ranging from suburban homes and parking lots to fantastical sets. Now more than a year later, the fruits of their labor are being released in a lavishly illustrated, 152-page hardbound book, Fairy Tales, out next week from Rizzoli. As children, Petra and Alexa were both enamoured with fairy tales, which provided an escape from their own painful realities. In my three years of being a die hard fan this has to be some of the most poignant work I’ve seen of hers.Created in collaboration with Euphoria star and muse Alexa Demie, Collins has just dropped "Fairy Tales," her latest book in the form of nine erotic short stories based on works by the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, and more. The photos combine elements of camp, prosthetics, and shibari in a surreal update to the imagery of the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, Charles Perrault, and others. Could it indeed be that these dark, twisted fantasies are a little more true to life than they seem? While Collins was mostly raised in the suburbs of Toronto, her mother fled Hungary in the 1980s, when it was still under Soviet rule.

Shooting since the age of 15, her work is fueled by self-discovery and a contemporary femininity which explore the complex intersection of life as a young woman online and off.In the Brothers Grimm version of Rapunzel, it’s hinted that the young woman has been locked away in a tower for her promiscuity, while the 17th-century Italian version of Sleeping Beauty sees the central character impregnated by the king during her slumber.

Hungary as a nation was dealing with being under a Soviet regime, so a lot of that work came out of collective trauma. Pre-release, it had already been solidified in pop-culture history with content creators mimicking the ethereal style on social media.Initially bought for the photos, obviously, so I didnt expect there to be multiple stories, and they honestly exceeded my expectations. Indeed, the interplay of text and images throughout the book has less in common with engravings from a well-thumbed tome of old fairy tales than with something like Madonna’s infamous Fabien Baron–designed, Steven Meisel–lensed publication, Sex. It helped too that there was an instant artistic synergy between the pair from their very first day on set together. Petra posted a photograph of a fairy, and I wrote to her and said, ‘I want to be a fairy,’ and she was like, ‘Well, let’s make you a fairy,’” Demie says of the origins of their friendship, laughing. Approaching it as women, it’s very interesting to play these mythical creatures that don’t necessarily have much agency and give them more agency.
