About this deal

The H5 is outfitted with Zoom's XYH-5 interchangeable stereo microphone that provides clear, phase-accurate capture in a classic 90° X/Y configuration for a tight stereo image.

That means that if you bought one through there, we’d earn a small commission from it, at no extra cost to yourself. Optional accessories: HS-1 hot shoe adapter , EXH-8, VRH-8, XAH-8, XYH-5, SSH-6, SGH-6, MSH-6, XYH-6, EXH-6, ECM-3, ECM-6. Zoom H1n has been designed to create professional quality audio recordings whilst retaining a very compact form. This has nothing to do with Zoom H5, and it will be constant regardless of what interface you’re using. It can be processed in post to sound much better, but if you need the best quality, I suggest checking out Zoom F6, which I will review soon, and which I found to be considerably better sounding than H5. Recording directly to 16MB to 2GB SD card, 4GB to 32GB SDHC card, or 64GB to 128GB SDXC card, the H6 records up to 24-bit/96kHz in BWF-compliant WAV format, or 48 to 320kbps in MP3 format. The same goes for the battery door on the back, it just feels a bit cheap and flimsy, so you'll need to take care when taking it on and off. X/Y recording allows you to cover a wide area yet still capture sound sources in the centre with clarity and definition, making it ideal for all types of live stereo recording.

This is because most people who can only afford it, will not be looking to invest in a subsequent microphone to connect to it. Compression and limiting compensate for fluctuations in input level, while a low-cut filter helps eliminate wind noise, blowing, and other kinds of low-frequency rumble. Note that media cards are available separately, and larger capacity cards will increase startup times.H5, with its own XY module sounds much much cleaner, with less hissing, less distortion, can take considerably more volume without distorting, is deeper, can go higher in frequency, is much better for singing and recording music, and takes in less echo than H2n does naturall. I don’t take that much pleasure reading and explaining technical aspects of microphones, but there are some key elements you will need to understand about H5 and how to take advantage of it and its features. By keeping the previous two seconds of audio whenever you press the record button, the pre-record option ensures that you'll never cut off the beginning of a great take. I have always been a bit frustrated with the overall build quality, and recording quality of the Zoom H2n, and always wanted an upgrade, and well, Zoom H5 has been that upgrade. Like XYH-5, Zoom XYH-6 is an X/Y audio capturing microphone capsule however it doesn’t have shock mounting properties.

The Zoom H5’s XLR/TRS combo inputs handle both mic and line-level signals for microphones, wireless receivers, mixers, keyboards and more. The supplied XYH-5 X/Y capsule also provides a secondary input for connecting stereo mic- or line-level signal via a â…›" mini phone jack. Two AAA alkaline batteries give up to 10 hours of continuous operation; or included AD-17 AC adapter may be used. The handling noise is acceptable on the H5 and not nearly as bad as it is on a Sony PCM D100 I once tried which needed to be used on one of those shock-mount handle grips or a tripod. Optional accessories: PCH-4n protective case, HS-1 hot shoe adapter , AD-14 AC power supply, RC4 wired remote control. In an echo-prone room, a mic like NTG-2 can help a lot with the unwanted echoes, but still the sound will lack the overall emotion, dynamic and warmth of the XY mic module that Zoom H5 comes with. The handheld microphone comes with an XLR cable that attaches from the bottom of the mic to Input 1. These items are extension cables designed to give the user the option of remote mounting their Zoom microphone/input capsules for better placement. Maybe some uncertainty on the capsules recording quality, they just didn't convince me completely 'cause for a hundred bucks less you get the H2n and the quality gap is not that high (I compared them with a consistent re-amping test). We bought this audio device for our NGO to capture audio on the go for our videos, interviews, podcasts and also in a booth to record voice over using XLR inputs.
