About this deal

From 1922 to 1936 he worked on the New York Daily News as sports editor, columnist, and assistant managing editor. Harris, is a middle-aged char-woman in London, but her innate energy, kindness, and curiosity get her into one adventure (or mishap) after another. These books are lovely, life affirming reads that will encourage you to believe in everyday miracles in your own life. They checked out the available movies and Granddaughter decided she wanted to see Mrs Harris Goes to Paris.

Resulta fácil simpatizar con la señora Harris y su amiga y confidente Violet, con la que toma el café cada tarde para ponerse al día de los cotilleos de las familias a las que sirven. The two women love their jobs, and what they love best is the gossip they pick up from their glamorous clients about the rich and famous people they mix with. Her dropped aitches, her rough hands and old clothes topped with a battered hat are all a part of her and she does not try to mask herself.

I absolutely loved this heartwarming story of a charwoman on an adventure to get herself a Dior dress! This handsome bright pink paperback combines the first two Mrs Harris books, in which the London char lady with a heart of gold finds herself having unlikely adventures in two of the world’s most remarkable cities, Paris and New York. The two of them are invited by a wealthy couple in the movie business to move to America and keep house.

Harris is back and trying to find the father of a young boy who is being mistreated by the family his mother left him with. This treasure from the 1950s introduces the irrepressible Mrs Harris, part charlady, part fairy-godmother, whose adventures take her from her humble London roots to the heights of glamour. Both novellas are a little predictable and you could guess the outcome of the second one in particular after the first few chapters. I’m so pleased that these reprint publishers exist as I know I’d never have heard of these fantastic novels without them. In fact I was so enamored by Mrs Harris that I immediately borrowed a digital book from the San Jose Public library that included two Mrs Harris novellas.

Very sweet and heartwarming story that is rather simple and ties up way too nicely from a realistic perspective. New York was almost over the line of too coincidental and, almost, twee, but you just can’t dislike Mrs Harris.
